Mom says I need to update my blog more

I always do what my mother tells me.

The Eagles have landed! Oh my! In a mega thunderstorm on Sunday, the tree with the Barton Cove Eagles' nest blew over! The camera is still functioning though, it just has a new view.

eagle2.jpg

Here is the statement from the web cam people:

"July 28, 2008 - Update
On Sunday July 27th just before 2:00 PM, the tree that held the Barton Cove Eagle nest blew over during a passing storm. We have contacted the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife office. We will post any new information when it is available."

The previous update suggests that the juvenile eagle dude was old enough to leave the nest from time to time, so hopefully, he's found a way to get by with help from mommy and daddy. Everybody root for the little guy!

"July 15, 2008 - Update
During the first week of July, the juvenile took its first real flight. The juvenile will remain around the nest area for the next four or five weeks. During this time the parents will still provide food. The juvenile will develop its hunting skills during this period and through out the remainder of the summer. As the juvenile’s hunting skills improve, and becomes more successful hunting, the parents will provide less and less food. In about six to nine weeks after the juvenile develops some hunting skills, it will leave the nesting area and will set out on its own."

They did it!! The Rendezvous is OPEN!

The Rendezvous opened this last Saturday and I've been there ever since. It's an amazing place to hang out, snack, drink, socialize, listen to the jukebox, play Ms. Pac Man, knit, crochet, write, or waste time. Here's pictures!!

Rendezvous! Oui!

My landlord, landlady, and Bo's Owner bought a bar, The Rendezvous. It's two doors down. I've started a list of demands. There may be a drink named after me. Sigh, they won't open until late spring! Stay tuned.

Here's the old bar. And here!

September 24, 2006

Yay! The photos are back!

I decided that rather than spending hours futzing with software and drivers and rebooting my machine a million times to get the connection between my camera and my computer working again, that I would go to Staples and get a USB adapter thingy for my camera SD thingy, so that I could just load the photos directly onto my computer, by-passing my camera. So, presto! We've got photos again! I think the blog o' power is much more festive with photos. Let's catch up.

Here's Mark at the end of the Reach the Beach 2006 relay road race in Hampton Beach, NH. Yes! The Nocklebeast came out east to visit me (and run). Don't you wish you were visiting me too? Though, if you do, I won't make you run 21 miles in relay fashion from mountains to the oceans traveling with 11 other stinky runners in a 27 hour period. Believe it our not, he volunteered for this. Mark "my quads are trashed" Nocklebeast.

Here's our patient, Tio Pepe, before he got sick with poopy issues. Do you see Lucy in the picture too? Here's another take on the paper vs. plastic debate. Last Sunday, the emergency vet learned from the vet assistant that Tio has a history of eating plastic bags. She kinda laughed, and I asked if this was something she'd seen before. "Oh yeah," she said, "though my cat prefers paper bags."

Time for an update - Bunnies! Bees! And more!

There has been a Vorpal Bunny siting in Turners.

IMG_4528_1.JPG

There has also been a cutie pie baby bunny siting. While still not able to compete with the Japanese (see the Jun 17, 2006 posting for Cute Overload), this bunny was found cute in the wild clover grasses of Turners. Who knew clover was so tastey? The bunnies! The bees!

Eaglet Update!

Did I mention I was behind on my stories? The eagle babies are growing! Here is the Northeast Utilities System Update from their web site:

Peparing to fledge
The eaglets have already grown very quickly since hatching on April 10 and 14. The younger eaglet is quite a bit smaller than its older sibling, but the parents are feeding both eaglets regularly, so both are getting adequate nutrition. Over their first three months of life, their hatching weight of about 100 grams will increase to around 4,000-5,000 grams — gaining as much as 180 grams a day. See just how quickly they have grown from week to week in the 2006 Picture Gallery.

The eaglets go through three different types of plumage as they grow. They have already outgrown the first downy stage, as well as the second "sooty gray downy" stage. The eaglets now show their Juvenile plumage which has grown in most rapidly on the back, shoulders, breast, and especially on the wings. Unlike adults, the eaglet has a bluish black beak and dark brown eyes, while its feet are bright yellow and its talons are black.

After seven weeks, the eaglets can flap their wings to get a boost into the air over the nest. They may hold on to a branch while flapping vigorously, which is good exercise to build up flying muscles. Trampling, treading and prancing around the nest strengthens leg muscles. Exercise like this is important, and increases as the eaglet grows older. At around nine weeks, the eaglet may perch on branches near the nest. Several weeks later, they will leave the nest for good. Watch the live streaming feature for an opportunity to see these activities.

Until then, enjoy the Eagle Cam images as the adults will be reliably present every time you log-on. NU, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, MassWildlife and the other Eagle Cam partners hope you enjoy this glimpse into the natural world of the bald eagle, and join you in wishing the birds a very successful nesting season.

Here's a cool picture from their web site showing an eaglet dude playing with his wings.

eagle6.jpg

Here's a picture of my TV, MCTV Montague Channel 17, showing the little eaglet dudes snoozin. Earlier I saw one try to flap his wings, but then a puff of wind knocked him over. He must have been embarassed.

No floods here, but still soggy

Most of the flooding that you're reading about in the headlines is more east of where I am (along the coast of Massachusetts and New Hampshire), though I was fully prepared for weather drama! This snippet from the Weather Service takes the wind out of the drama sails though.

"For the Connecticut River at Montague...
the Flood Warning has been cancelled.
The 11 am Monday stage was 26.1 feet.
Flood stage is 28.0 feet.
Flooding has ended and the river will gradually recede."

This is one of my favorite links for tracking river levels around here. If you recall, October was quite soggy too!

I decided to go for a walk, in case the national weather service was all wrong, to see if I saw evidence of sogginess. My conclusion: the October water levels were higher. I did get some happy photos though before my camera batteries gave up on me. And, I met a new friend!

Muskrat love? I think this is a muskrat. Discuss.

By request: Cushion update

By rather persistent request from Timmy, here is your cushion update.

The cushion moves no more in Massachuesetts.
The cushion flies on the wind to Connecticut.
The cusion lives.
The cushion dies.
Softer still in the night.

Or, I can't see the cushion any more from my window. And, I read way too much Emily Dickinson last night.

Please, take a moment to remember the cushion:

Eagles as cat sitters?

I finally remembered to turn on local access TV to see the eagles live during the day time today. On Monday one of the two little eagle chickies hatched, and I'm not sure yet if there's word on whether the second one has hatched yet. I watched for a bit then continued playing in my apartment, doing whatever it is I do when I'm not really accomplishing anything. Then, I found lucy like this:

IMG_3346_1.JPG

She was totally consumed with watching the birdies. I'm not sure if she was so fascinated because she thought they looked like prey, or if she knew deep down that they thought of her as prey. So, as I left my apartment mid afternoon to start my day, this was the scene.

Winter's last gasp?

To finish up the story of J visiting Western Mass, here's our last outdoor adventure that we had on Monday. We went to Barton's Cove across the river from Turners Falls, in Gill, to see if by chance we could spot the eagle's nest. And, I think we did! Not very well, but I think it's there in them there trees. It was sunny, but beyond cold with the wind, so our nature visit was short lived out there. J took some silly movies with her camera both here and at the St. Patrick's Day parade, which at some point I'll try to figure out how to post them here (Hmmm ... maybe after my teaching application is due). In the mean time, check out flickr for the rest of the last of winter (I hope!!). It's been in the 40's for high temps since Monday, so I'm praying we're in the clear!

Check out the eagles nest blob! Don't forget the eagle cam!

IMG_3078_1.JPG

Check me out!

IMG_1483_1.JPG

J took this lovely shot of the ice in the Connecticut. Just two weeks or so ago, I could see stick figures walking around on this ice from the Turners Falls side of the river. Goofy ice fishing peoples. However, the ice is too mushy to walk on now. Ha! Take that winter!

Just a quick note to say you should check out my latest photos on flickr! Tons of way happy photos for you to enjoy. I'll write more about the context in a bit, but you should go to flickr! Lots of fun descriptions too, written with love.

If you go to flickr, you will see:

Eagle cam!

Howdy! There is an eagles couple that regularly nests at Barton's Cove on the Connecticut River near Turners Falls. The local access TV plays the eagle cam all the time when they are nesting, and today I got to see the changing of the guard for sitting on their 2 eggs! One egg showed up on Monday, and another one on Wednesday, so the current projection is that there will be baby eagles approximately April 9th. Check out the eagles! (during daylight hours EST).

More pics, new walksies territory, and Lucy takes over

I put that nifty Flickr banner at the top of this here blog. What do ya'll think? I find it festive. Today: I slept in, went for a long long walk along the most southern parts of the power canal which was new to me, went to an art opening reception at the UMASS student union, and then Lucy took over my desk. It's hard to write under these conditions.

IMG_2360_1.JPG

I took pictures of the art, but I figure maybe it's uncool to post them on the internet without permission, so you'll have to imagine a painting with a dude sticking out his tongue and either spitting blood or licking it; a photograph of a lady on a couch looking somewhat naughty; a mannequin of a young girl in a hospital gown with real yet unreal feet and hands and real human hair, but no face, and the hair all over where the face would be; a big blue thing with pink thingies sticking out of it with cotton coming out of the pink thingies and a noose holding it all up; an all black painting and/or photograph (Buttwipe would have loved it); a lime green boa with what looks like long boogers at each end of it; a bunch of rubber tubing cut up and stuck on a board, ends up, in a kind of rubber tubing cityscape; and much much more!

So here's pics from my walksies instead. More, of course, on flickr.

Not so much snow, as COLD!

We didn't get pummeled with snow like most of the east coast, but we have gotten a bit, maybe 4-5 inches? I'm about to go out and check it out. But, it is 21 degrees outside at 3:15 p.m. EEEK! Bo is coming over so we can go for a walk in the snow. SNOW! I will take pictures. I think it's my Willamette Valley Girl upbringing that always makes me hyper when it snows. I might have to call Tiffy later on. The internets say they got up to 22 inches in NYC!!

My favorite weather link shows that as of 9 a.m. Greenfield had 3 inches, which is the closest town reporting on exact snow amounts. Word here is that: "Further northwest from far northwest Massachusetts including western sections of Franklin and Hampshire County into western and northern Cheshire County of southwest New Hampshire... this will be manageable snow event with light to moderate snow."

True. I was ready for drama though.

You guessed it ... More photos!

I'm having too much fun with my new camera, the snow, and my new best friend, Bo. Did I mention I get to doggy sit Bo in January?! Smiles all around. Here's my latest adventure today. I'm still working out how to improve focusing and taking pictures in low light settings, but every time I shoot, I learn more. Even though several photos are still fuzzy, I kinda like them. And by default, if there's a doggy or kitty in the photo, then it's great, because even if it's fuzzy, they ARE fuzzy, so it just works.

Here's a brief sampling:

What's better than snow? A doggy in the snow!

I was spazzin about the snow this afternoon (as every girl from the Willamette Valley should), and when I power bugged my neighbor/MFA comrade when he was in a writing zone, he was kind enough to let me steal his awesome dog Bo for a walk. We had great fun. And we met the lone goose in the Connecticut, chillin with the duckies. See all of the evidence here!

Here's Bo, checking out the start of sunset:

Here's the goose, checking out duck butts:

IMG_0614_1.JPG

So far, I must say Turners Fallsians know how to deal with snow (unlike Seattlites who are just dumb, mostly). Bunches of folks had their snow blowers, snow shovels, and snow plows out. That's right, not just the town has snow plows, but many folks have their own, or run a business of snow plowing. Bunches of rigs had them mounted to their fronts. If I ever get in a jam, I'm going to call the Plow Frau, who I saw today, because the name is poetical. I hoofed it to the hardware store (yes, tons of stuff is within walking distance here!), and bought a snow shovel and snow broom/sweepy thingy, and I uncovered my car after I found it looking like this:

IMG_0602_1.JPG

I gave it a snow mohawk on the roof (too dark to get a photo), and then drove it a few feet in the parking lot, just to get my snow driving training wheels on. I didn't need to go anywhere, but it was nice to know I could if I had to. If I had been truly stuck, the police station is just across the street. I'm sure some strapping young officer would have come to my rescue. We can hope anyway.

Kitties! Snow day!

More festive photos for ya'll. Yesterday, I put the kitties on the windowsill so they could make funny noises at the birdies that were outside flitting around on the trees. Happy red berries for birdies. Happy cute little fuzzy wannabe killers. Killers shouldn't be cute, but they can be under the right fuzzy circumstances.

IMG_0553_1.JPG

Today, mega snow! These photos are from my front window. UMASS announced it was a snow day, no classes. Kinda less thrilling when I didn't have any classes scheduled anyway, but still nice. I'm going to walk around out there in a bit once I get bundled up.

Photos reorganized

I got a pro flickr account, so now it's much easier to organize my photos by topic, just go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/bugginyou. Click on the photo album looking "set" on the left that you want to see and weeee!

And since I'm here, I'll give you an update. Lucy's on my lap (oh wait that's not new). I've got snot (oh wait, that's not new either), and I slept in, completely confounding the universe and its laws. Anyway, the weekend was fun -- I went to live lit (and the party afterwards which seems to be the real reason people go...), and saw a Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz play, House of Desire, performed by UMASS theater students. It was kind of a Shakespearian romantic comedy type thing-- not bad for a 17th Century Mexican Nun!

The poetry reading at the laundromat yesterday went well, and was good fun, and people seemed appreciative of my stuff. I managed to read before my cold went super snotty on me, which is good!

Since I'm snot bound -- send me a note! Say hey!

More Turners Falls pictures for you and America's Next Cat Model

Just a note to say I went for walksies this afternoon and took a bunch more photos of Turners Falls. I started out with a spirtual mindset and took pictures of all the churches, then found myself exploring new territory along the river more south of where I usually take pictures, and met a chipper Turners Fallsian kitty. I also got some lovely Tio Pepe shots in -- looking kinda freaky and wigged out, but that's why we love him, right? Here's a sampler:

Time for an update

Howdy!

The latest updates on Massachusetts Life:

--Last Friday, J and I went to Emily Dickinson's grave in Amherst, which is very near her old house which is now a museum (I hope to go there soon), and we read her poetry there and generally thought about death and eternity and stuff in the snow. Then we went to Lady Killigrew and had hot tea and a good pee and I bought a used reference book on poetry. Gotta stop reading poetry that rhymes. Here's pictures! (I'm still getting used to FlickR .. hopefully you'll find all the EM photos.)

IMG_0382_1.JPG

--J and I went to Boston last Saturday. We drove to a suburban subway stop and headed into town, had a traditional Irish breakfast for lunch at an official Irish pub, roamed the streets, checked out famouse people dead in historic graveyards, saw massive amounts of cool paintings at the Boston Museum of Fine Art, and then had yummy Chinese food in Boston's Chinatown. There's tons left to see and do in Boston and we only had 1 day, but it was a fine introduction. Here's pictures!

IMG_0399_1.JPG

--On Sunday, J and I went to Shelburne Falls and saw a super cute little town with an amazing falls on the Deerfield River. We shopped a bit, checked out the falls and the many potholes in the river, then had a yummy breakfast for brunch at the Bridge Street Cafe that everyone should go to. Then we went to North Adams to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, also known as Mass MOCA. A very cool setting, and cool art too! J and I both liked the paintings on display from an art studio in Berlin ("Live After Death: New Leizpig Paintings from the Rubell Family Collection), and the Becoming Animal exhibit was a trip. Here's pictures! (I'm still getting used to FlickR .. hopefully you'll find all the Shelburne Falls photos.)

IMG_0449_1.JPG

--This weekend there's another installment of Live Lit on Friday at Amherst Books, a Turners Falls Art and Icicles gallery/art weekend thingy, and a poetry reading (and other arty stuff) in a laundromat. It's the laundromat below me, and I get to read for 5 minutes along as will bunches of other folks, including my landlord and a fellow MFA-er at UMASS. I will report back on what it's like, should be fun.

--Oh, and it will probably snow at some point in the next 3-4 days. Wee!

Coming soon:

Loose cows and art needs to percolate - so deal!

First - a bonus in this weeks Montague Reporter includes both Gill's and Montague's police logs. I think I like this one from Gill the best:

11/12 - 11:02 p.m. Loose cow on West Gill Road. Contacted owners to remove same.

Just because a cow wants to get out and have a little fun on a Saturday night, does that mean she's "loose"?

Second, to bug ya'll back about buggin me about my light school load .... darlings, this is art we're talking about here. You can't rush it! You must free your schedule to free your mind! And, well, neener, neener, neener.

I forgot to mention that I will likely also audit this class, and maybe get some independent study credits for it at some point, if I do something creative with it.

491A-L1 Neruda in Translation 55756
Instructor: M. Espada M 4:00 – 6:30 pm
Same as Latin-Am 491A. This is an introduction, in English translation, to the man considered by many to be the greatest Latin American poet of the 20th century. The poetry of Neruda is marked by a series of aesthetic and political metamorphoses, and the course is organized around the enormous diversity of the work: the early love poems, surrealism, the political poems, brought on by Neruda’s experience with the Spanish Civil War, the sweeping historical works best represented by his masterpiece, The Heights of Macchu Picchu, the humorous odes, the nature poems, and so on. The life of Neruda was also characterized by dramatic change, likewise charted throughout the course: from his career as a diplomat to his bitter years as a hunted political exile, from his acknowledgment as Nobel Laureate to his isolated death in the wake of the 1973 coup in Chile. Neruda was a witness to history, and special attention will be devoted to that history, particularly in terms of the Spanish Civil War and the Chilean coup. The course will also focus on the process of translation, and students will be encouraged to compare translations with one another, as well as against the original text. Students in this Honors course are required to write several papers, with an optional class presentation.

I've got my moose bag, but I missed the monster

I walked to the library for their book sale and got there by 12:20 -- which is pretty good for me! I got a moose bag ($12), and grabbed a bunch of books. Some are more random than others, but hey, it was a good deal. If I hadn't got the moose bag I would have got 12 books for only $2! So what loot, you ask?

--2 Irving Stone biographical novels. I haven't read any Irving Stone since I read his biographical novel on Michelangelo in high school. But I loved it then, so what the heck? I have his novels on Charles Darwin and Sigmund Freud now.
--The Oxford Book of Light Verse, published in 1938. It's poetry, it's old, who can resist?
--The 1898 publication of The Complete Poetical Works of Alfred Lord Tennyson. I don't even know if I like good old Tenny, but 1898!?! Phrases like "Whilome though camest with the morning mist,/ And with the evening could,/ Showering thy gleened wealth into my open breast;/..." Heck, that's just crazy fun!
--The Story and Its Writer, an anthology of short stories, and some critical essays on short stories. To get my MFA degree I have to take one writing workshop in a genre other than my main focus... which means I have to write fiction. Eek! This book might help. Who can say?
--Black Like Me, by John Howard Griffin, 1960 -- A white man goes to the South as a black man, and publishes his journal...
--A Dick Francis mystery, Break In, I've probably already read it, but I don't remember, which means that I won't remember who done it either. :-)
--Bunnicula -- A Rabit Tale of Mystery, 1979. Should be fun. Becky, have you read it?
--A Book of New England, 1947-- here I am getting all historical again, but with chapters like "Maple Sugar", "Taverns", "Puritan Children", "Heretics and Witches", and my favorite "Peddlers and Artists" -- what's not to like?
--John Cheever's the Wapshot Scandal, 1959, although, now I'm realizing there's a novel before it which I should probably read first... The Wapshot Chronicle, but oh well.
--Anne Lommot's Blue Shoe, novel.
--Marge Piercy's novel, The Longings of Women -- It's a hokey title, but who knows? She's an acclaimed poet/novelist person.

oh, and how am I doing on my 700 pager that's due on Thursday? ... I'm on p. 109. Must focus. FOCUS.

I missed the Monster tag sale because I didn't realize it ended at 2 p.m. Oops. I'll get a monster another day.

No new moose sitings, but I'll take a moose on a bag, please

The Montague Reporter weekly newspaper didn't include the weekly police log this week, but there's still a bunch going on in the villages!

--There is a book sale at the Turners Falls Carnegie Library on Saturday, that I plan to go to, if I can manage to get up in time. It is from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. If you buy the "Friends of the Library Moose Bag" for $12, you can fill it with books from the sale room for free!
--There is also a MONSTER tag sale at the Montague town center on Saturday. I'm going to try to get one that will fit under my bed.
--The musical The Sound of Music is playing this weekend at the Shea Theater a block away, and for some reason I'm tempted to go. It must be the poetry in me.
--Saturday at the Belly Bowl Cafe just down the street, there's a poetry performance & more. I don't know what to expect at all, especialy "& more", so I gotta go!
--Next Wednesday the Montague Historial Society Annual Meeting will be held at the Book Mill, and there will be a guest lecture on "Montague Plain, Environment, Ecological and Oral History." My inner historian geek will attend, unless I'm behind on my lit homework (over 700 pages to read in Allan Gurganus' Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All by next Thursday!) I gotta get to know my new hood!
--There's a newly remodeled small grocery store in Gill, just up the road which I must check out, because the last time the Montague Reporter gave a tip on a grocery store, I found some yummy home made italian sausages at Carroll's Market in Millers Falls.
--I missed the Great Falls Discovery Center talk on Black Bears returning to Massachusetts this evening because I thought I'd stop by The Lady Killigrew instead. The sandwich I had there was supper yummy , so I'll learn about black bears in Massachusetts another time.
