Falcon Update

Here's an update on my previous post about the pair of Peregrine Falcons nesting on the top of the UMASS library.

They had two babies! They even got a press release! The babies are attempting to fly around now, one apparently more successfully than the other. I saw some folks with cameras and binoculars on campus today, and what do you know ... the two young falcons were perched on the fine arts building. I think they've chosen their majors. Here's shots of them getting bands on their ankles so they can be tracked. Here's shots of one of the little dudes a week ago. They're so cool looking!

Here's my picture of one of them from this afternoon. It's hard to see too much detail in the photo, but it sure was neato to see in person. I need more zoom, zoom, zoom! And, I saw the parents circling the library tower. Bunnies! Chipmunks! Squirrels! Run! Hide!

And, bonus. Scenic cloud formations at UMASS:

Time for an update - Bunnies! Bees! And more!

There has been a Vorpal Bunny siting in Turners.

IMG_4528_1.JPG

There has also been a cutie pie baby bunny siting. While still not able to compete with the Japanese (see the Jun 17, 2006 posting for Cute Overload), this bunny was found cute in the wild clover grasses of Turners. Who knew clover was so tastey? The bunnies! The bees!

So cute! So consistent!

Speaking of beez. BZZZZZZZZZZZZT!

If you've not been to my flickr site lately, you're missing out on some serious animal fun.

New York City Road Trip #3

A few more fun notes on my New York City Road trip. Of course, it is also documented with photos on flickr.

My hotel, Herald Square Hotel, was in the middle of "Korea Way" around w. 31st and Broadway, so of course I ate yummy Korean food:
--Bi Bim Bop with chopped seafood and rice in a hot hot earthenware bowl at Woo Chon, 8-10 W. 36th St.
--Yummy Korean pork dumplings in soup at Mandoo Bar.

And yummy Chinese food, cus I was in THE city.
--Wu Liang Ye, 338 Lexington Ave.
--Great NY Noodle Town, 28 Bowery

Treats:
--Happy coffee and a horseshoe shaped and sized almond cookie that was amazing at The Hungarian Pastry Shop.
--Coffe and chocolate cake at Juan Valdez coffee
--Brunch with a famous Star choreographer and her Parental Units at Westway Diner-Restaurant. Happy food and happy to catch up with the Oregonian peeps!

The sites:
--The Cathedral of St. John the Divine
--Children's sculpture garden, right next to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine.
--The North end of Central Park including the Ravine area in a downpour, the Harlem Meer, and the Conservatory Garden, all beautiful. Go to the Conservatory Garden if you can!
--The Met, modern art collection. Very good!
--A misstep of note: The New Museum of Contemporary Art has MOVED. It is at 556 West 22nd St at 11th Ave. Your guidebook may be out of date. Oops, didn't quite make it there, but I did find the MoMA Design Store in Soho at 81 Spring St. Awesome!
--I snuck into The Strand bookstore and only spent $12!
--At the end of the trip, I bought some new New Balance tennies cus my feetsies were killing me. I squeezed a lot into my 3 days!

Entertainment:
--2 nights of fabulous dance by the Tiffany Mills Company! If you have a New York Times online subscription, look for a review on June 3rd.
--Dinner with the choreographer, dancers, family and friends at The Film Center Cafe.

Bo Update!

Dudes! Bo's Arts the book is out! That's right. Pages of stunning Bo vignettes and Bo inspired art. If you're in Western Massachusetts you are required to attend the reading on Flag Day at the Lady Killigrew!

Of course, many of you avid Buggin' You readers already know Bo so well, but I tell you, there is even more to know about Bo.

Buy the Book!

Read the review in the Montague Reporter (by yours truly)!

Eaglet Update!

Did I mention I was behind on my stories? The eagle babies are growing! Here is the Northeast Utilities System Update from their web site:

Peparing to fledge
The eaglets have already grown very quickly since hatching on April 10 and 14. The younger eaglet is quite a bit smaller than its older sibling, but the parents are feeding both eaglets regularly, so both are getting adequate nutrition. Over their first three months of life, their hatching weight of about 100 grams will increase to around 4,000-5,000 grams — gaining as much as 180 grams a day. See just how quickly they have grown from week to week in the 2006 Picture Gallery.

The eaglets go through three different types of plumage as they grow. They have already outgrown the first downy stage, as well as the second "sooty gray downy" stage. The eaglets now show their Juvenile plumage which has grown in most rapidly on the back, shoulders, breast, and especially on the wings. Unlike adults, the eaglet has a bluish black beak and dark brown eyes, while its feet are bright yellow and its talons are black.

After seven weeks, the eaglets can flap their wings to get a boost into the air over the nest. They may hold on to a branch while flapping vigorously, which is good exercise to build up flying muscles. Trampling, treading and prancing around the nest strengthens leg muscles. Exercise like this is important, and increases as the eaglet grows older. At around nine weeks, the eaglet may perch on branches near the nest. Several weeks later, they will leave the nest for good. Watch the live streaming feature for an opportunity to see these activities.

Until then, enjoy the Eagle Cam images as the adults will be reliably present every time you log-on. NU, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, MassWildlife and the other Eagle Cam partners hope you enjoy this glimpse into the natural world of the bald eagle, and join you in wishing the birds a very successful nesting season.

Here's a cool picture from their web site showing an eaglet dude playing with his wings.

Here's a picture of my TV, MCTV Montague Channel 17, showing the little eaglet dudes snoozin. Earlier I saw one try to flap his wings, but then a puff of wind knocked him over. He must have been embarassed.

This just in! Mommy Eagle brought fishy snacks!

And now the fishy has no head.

Christmas in June?

Now that the Cushion has moved on to NYC, there's a new phenomenon in Turners. This time on Avenue L.

Hi Santa! How's it goin?

IMG_4114_1.JPG

Bo's not interested in Santa, but the red leash matches nicely.

IMG_4115_1.JPG

A half hour later, OMG! Santy Claus, WA HAPPEN'D?!

Cushion Update!!!

Of course! If I was a cushion I would go to New York City too! The hotel room I got at The Herald Square Hotel was nice inside for a relatively budget price. By no means was I expecting a view until I discovered .... the cushion on a ledge outside my room. It had changed a bit from it's adventures on 3rd St. in Turners, but it seemed to still be lovin life as a cushion. Instead of a dark greenish blue outfit, it had changed to more of a tie die washed out pink ensemble. An excellent relaxed choice for adventures in the big city.

Could it be?!

It's true!
